Sydney Independent Opera presents Pagliacci! SIO will be sharing the headline for the Opera by the Sea festival with acclaimed opera singer Yvonne Kenny.

Newsflash: Crazed clown attacks wife in front of live audience.

Theatre and reality collide in a dramatic climax of truly operatic proportions when Canio discovers his wife has eyes for another. “Laugh, clown, and everyone will applaud, at your broken love!” he exclaims in one of opera’s most legendary tenor arias.

This is an intense drama of sexual jealousy and revenge and is perfect for newcomers to opera to see what the fuss is about.  Pagliacci is gut-wrenching and visceral and when the laughter turns to tears, we have a window into how a jealousy-driven rage can turn betrayal into vengeance.  Counselling and support are better options but this is opera!

Sydney Independent Opera presents Mozart and Salieri.

Friends or foe?  The rivalry between Mozart and Salieri has become the stuff of legends.  Soon after Mozart’s death, a reporter in Prague published an article stating that, because the corpse was swollen, it was believed that he was poisoned.  There was much speculation as to the identity of the supposed assassin.  Rumours persisted and mutated until, finally, around 1820, the prominent Italian composer Salieri was named. This caused Salieri to have a nervous breakdown and, while being treated in a Vienna hospital, it was reported that, in a delusional state of mind, he accused himself of killing Mozart.Libretto from the play by Alexander Pushkin.

Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro is the featured opera in SIOs next Gala Concert. For some, this opera is just the best. It has a stream of good tunes, a certainty of step, a story that keeps us on the edge of our seats, characters we love and some we don’t, and two ensemble finales that are just magnificent. These two finales are perhaps the best-ever comedy written by Mozart. Sometimes things stop for a bout of wonder or confusion, but not for long. Nothing like the static finales of Verdi or Donizetti, where a single dilemma will keep everyone on the go for a long, long time. Each finale flies by and, by the time plot and action stop and pure ensemble music takes over, they have been so well prepared by what has come before, and the transitions so effortlessly effected, you’ll be amazed how Mozart has been able to build the increased musical excitement and musical apotheosis from the story itself. (Don’t worry, we’ll give you ‘the story so far’ before each finale so you’ll know what is happening. You can then just revel in Mozart’s and de Ponte’s genius.)We will be presenting these two finales along with other operatic favourites from a stellar cast.
